A tenant writes to say the rental has no RCDs. Here is the official WA process, from Building and Energy. [1]
The five steps
- The tenant asks the property manager or landlord to have RCDs installed.
- If nothing happens, the tenant sends a written request and keeps a copy of the letter.
- If RCDs are still not installed within a reasonable time, the tenant sends Building and Energy a copy of the letter, a copy of the rental agreement and a photo of the main switchboard.
- Building and Energy inspects the property.
- If RCDs are required, an Order is issued to the owner, who must arrange for them to be installed.
What a rental needs
Rented homes must have at least two RCDs protecting the final sub-circuits to socket outlets and lighting, and each RCD may protect no more than three final sub-circuits. [2] Two is the minimum, and more than two may be needed. [3] Fitting RCDs is work for a licensed electrical contractor.
