Building and Energy, the WA energy safety regulator, has notified industry that two updated Australian standards apply to electrical licence holders. This is our plain-language summary of that official notice. [1]
What changed
- AS/NZS 5139:2019 Amd 1:2025 covers the safety of battery systems used with power conversion equipment.
- AS/NZS 3008.1.1:2025 covers the selection of cables.
Both standards were published on 19 December 2025. [1]
Key dates
- The regulations allowed compliance with the earlier editions for six months after publication.
- From 19 June 2026, electrical licence holders must fully comply with both updated standards. [1]
What the update covers
For battery systems, the notice lists clearer definitions, refined requirements for where systems can be located, barrier requirements for habitable rooms, requirements for pre-assembled and integrated battery rooms, and updated documentation, labelling and hazard information. For cable selection it lists expanded DC coverage, new current-carrying capacity tables and updated short-circuit and voltage rise guidance. [1]
Why it matters if you are thinking about a battery
Our suggestion, not an official requirement: when you get a battery quote, ask the installer to confirm the design follows the current standards.
